What is the easiest way to size up with gauges?

I currently have 20g holes (standard) i would like to get to 14 or 16. I don't know what way to go around this plugs or tapers. I would also like to know if different materials would affect the way it heals (silicon, stainless steel, wood, bone, ect..). Also if anyone would like to help me with the differences between the differences in types. Everyone says plugs are a *****? i would like to start with a 18 to 10g tapers. if anyone would like to help!
